Edgbaston Cricket Ground

If you are a fan of Cricket then chances are that you will know all about Edgbaston Cricket Ground. Thought to be one of the greatest global test match venues in the Cricket world, it is a place that Cricket fans from across the world flock to each and every year.

The history of the Cricket Ground

Originally owned by the Calthorpe Estate, Edgbaston Stadium was put in place to be an asset to the developing and exclusive suburb of Birmingham that Edgbaston was becoming. After viewing a few different locations to call their base, the founders of the Cricket ground picked a site that was only 20 minutes walk from New Street Station. In 1885, the lease for the land was agreed and the work could begin.

It took an investment of £1,250 to ensure that the pavilion was built, the ground was enclosed and the pitch was drained, and in 1886 the first match was played with over 3,000 spectators coming to watch over the two days of play.
Whilst local matches were played at the ground from then. The first test match was played in 1902 with the first in the Ashes series. Knowing that there was going to be a good crowd a permanent stand and two temporary stands were built.
Edgbaston was also the site for the first competitive floodlight powered day to night Cricket match which was played in July 1997.

More than just the ground

Whilst Edgbaston Cricket Ground is known to be a top quality Cricket ground in its own right, there is also so much more than the grounds that just that. The indoor Cricket Centre comes with a net hire which means that players of all levels can practice and hone in on their skills. There is also hard ball courses that are designed to help children between the ages of 8 and 12 to learn skills and gain confidence that will help them to improve their Cricket playing.

Some Cricket fans choose to hold an event or a birthday party at the ground. These celebrations are available throughout the year with 8 Cricket nets and 2 large function rooms, all with the very best standard of hospitality.

As you can see, Edgbaston Cricket Ground is not only a great place to visit if you are big fan of Cricket. But is also fantastic if you are looking for a great place to hold an event or arrange a function. All not fair from the city centre and found within an amazing setting!
